Mines were a legitimate weapon when EVE launched, but their functionality was removed very soon (2004?) due to mine fields causing extensive lag.
Status[]
They can still be bought in numerous quantities. The BPO also exists, can be used to build mines, and it is not too rare. In 2012, mines and their BPO were among a number of relic items that were accidentally deleted from the game, but were later restored.
